   Have you, like me, sometimes felt you were "allergic" to certain expressions or scriptural references?  Here's one way that helped me to let go and walk free...

  What if every time someone said the word “God” or “Lord” you heard the words “Great Spirit”, “the Ocean of life”, “the powers that Be”, “fate”, ”the True friend” or even Nature, Possibilities, Oneness, or whatever helps you grow? Could it be any worse than thinking, when people say “Lord” or “the Lord” that they are referring to a mean man “up there” in Heaven with a long white beard throwing thunderbolts at you? We all have somewhat different understandings of the words we use, so what could be so wrong with choosing a slight “translation” into terms that we can stomach? Especially if it helps us all to get along.

Getting Around: 

 Alternative Religious Terms
In trying to communicate with Bible -pumpers or what some call “God- talkers”-- or in reading spiritual relics, re-naming terms that we find troublesome can help transcend our issues and discomforts.  I myself refuse to let flimsy, misrepresented terms upset me 
or deter me from pursuing my own valued relationships or spiritual goals.


“God- Talk”: Possible “Improved Translations”
Here are some suggestions for updated meanings that can help us re-define difficult religious concepts:

Lord, or God ... means, or can mean ... Great Spirit, Universal Light, by whatever name you call it

Jesus ... can refer to … a Great or Prophetic Being who came to earth by many names.

“The Father” ... can mean ... God, or 'A Ray of Hope', or Spirit by whatever name you call it.

“He” or “Him” (in reference to God) ... can mean ... Something Bigger than myself;

Sin ... can mean …a choice made out of temptation or ego; or it may refer to not the wisest choice, or something not to the Highest Good

Evil ... can mean … a bad thing, (bad in whose view?), or, a really horrible thing.

Devil ...can mean ... a place in us that wants a “bad “ thing ( Bad in whose view?) Devil, as used in the church view could refer to “animal desire” “lower nature”, etc.

Heaven or Holy ... can mean … a Higher Reality.
             Hell ... can mean … pain or suffering, on earth or other- worldly.

“Thee” or “Thou” are classic terms, a more formal mode of address.

Some of the terms above may contribute to a poetic, royal quality and an elevated discourse that endures through the ages, but are sometimes a cumbersome distraction for modern readers.

   You can easily add to this list of “improved” alternative religious terms and translations using your own creativity!
